Why do Google search results look different?

Search your query and check what appears above the organic results. The same position can receive different numbers of clicks.

Previously: How does Google rank websites? Maps, videos and direct answers can change what appears above the organic results.

Worked example

Organic position and screen position differ

Keep the organic rank at three and change what sits above it.

Your page is the third organic result

What to noticeStart by reaching the top three or five. This layout gives the leading organic results most of the visible space.

Example layouts. Ranking position remains the primary starting point for earning clicks; features can modify the available clicks.

A search results page can contain ads, maps, videos, direct answers and organic links. The mix changes with the query.

“Bike repair near me” may show a map of local businesses. “How to replace a bike chain” may show videos or a direct answer. Both layouts can push organic links farther down the screen.

Check what people see before your result

Start with ranking position. Find queries where you can reach the top three or five and earn clicks. Layout is a secondary check on how many clicks those positions make available.

Search your target query. What appears above the first organic link? Can someone get the answer or choose a business without opening a website?

An organic position describes where your page sits among the organic results. Position three doesn’t guarantee a particular number of clicks.

For a short factual question, a direct answer may leave little reason to click. A detailed repair guide may still give people a reason to open a page.

Use the same search settings

Country, language, device and time can change the results. Save those settings when recording a ranking or screenshot.

If you compare a mobile search in London with a desktop search in another country, the difference may come from the settings rather than a change in your page’s rankings.

Check repeated results from your site

Google also handles similar results and limits how often one site appears. Publishing several pages for the same question doesn’t guarantee several top positions.

If your own pages target overlapping queries, compare the ranking URLs and check which page appears in Search Console. Do that before creating another version of the same answer.

Compare expected clicks with actual clicks

When estimating clicks, save the query, country, search-volume source and results layout. If volume is unavailable, label it unmeasured.

After publication, check impressions, clicks and CTR for the page and query in Search Console. Compare those numbers with your estimate.

The exercise shows two example layouts. Your page stays at the same organic position, while a feature above it changes how much space readers see before reaching it.

Keep this in your notes

Search your query and check what appears above the organic results. The same position can receive different numbers of clicks.

The next question

Check position first: the top three or five give you a starting opportunity to earn organic clicks. Continue with does ctr affect seo?
